hi all

i have 2 koi in my quarantine tank which is set at 24 -25 degrees as the koi have ulcers on them which are nearly healed

what do i do if for instance i get a sick koi and the pond is at 10 degrees and my qt is at 24 degrees obviously i cant add the koi to the qt with such a temp difference

the reason im asking is i lost a 12 inch koi over the weekend it looked like it had a huge lump down its side but i had nowhere to put it as the qt was at 24 degrees after it died i stuck a syringe in the lump and a load of poison/ nasty stuff was sucked out

i dont think even with the qt at the right temp i could have saved it

so how do you get by with only one qt

thanks steve

sounds like scepecemia not a lot you could have done at such a late stage are you keeping the two koi that are almost better in their all winter or are you planning to lower the temp and put them pput for winter..difficult situation not sure if it was that poorly I would want to mix it with the two that are almost right..

hi jools

i to was concerned about the other 2 catching it

but what do you or others do in these situations ?

do you end up with 4-5 diff qt set-ups

regarding the 2 koi in the qt i would like to get them back in the main pond again this year but as alan t told me on the other site it might be hard  work what with the temp differences

do you think it would be easy to equalize the temps my pond is  changing temps radically it dropped 8 degrees over the last 2 nights

thanks steve

it is going to be difficult with the temperatures changing so much the change in temperature is not always as bad if you go from cold to warm I was listening to a guy at walesby aquatics saying that a 6 degree temp change going warmer isnt too bad I would be tempted to drop them a bit once they have healed fully and see what our outside temperatures get to.....fortunately for me I have only ever had to use the qt fascility on single occasions meaning one in and it was empty when I needed it again..

we,v got some little ones in the q/t for over winter and temp is at 24deg but pond is only at 14deg, if we have any problems with the pond fish over winter they will get put in the q/t now with the little ones and they will have to take there chances  i,m afraid i think its too late and cold to start moving the q/t fish in to the pond,

only my oppinion

but surely taking koi out of the pond at 14 degree and sticking them in a qt setup at 24 is not good either

no its not ideal but i would lower the q/t over a few days (or do a water change to the q/t to drop the temp a little more quickly, if i realy neaded to) then float the pond koi in a bag for half an hour to an hour, its not too bad moving a koi up in temp as quickly as it is dropping them to  lower temp, (hope that makes sence) i guess it would depend on what the problem with the pond koi was, but my koi in the pond are more important to me than the little ones in the q/t so they have to come first, hope that doesnt sound too cruel its not ment to
