lava rock or (alfaGROG) is all i used for a long time pip its exellent at retaining and growin bacteria
probably better than anything else the surface area is massive!!
BUT...its also great at collecting what ever else is floating around and gets dirty really quickly
i found myself cleaning it out on a much to often basis so i changed,ill give ya 3 or 4 bags o the stuff if ya want it!!.lol
it must be kept in cleaned filtered water m8 or it clogs up really fast!!

We've acquired some lava rock that was recommended for one of the filter bays - what is anyone's experience of this? Worth replacing the media with it?

well you all have seen my filter it is a little big but when i do the bigger pond it should be good for the 10 -12000 gallon that im hopingfor but that wont be for a few years yet

my filter is a 14 ft multi bay and holds about 800 gallon

bay 1 settlement with 18 black night brushes

bay 2 jools eazy but in a washing machine drum

bay 3 fluidized k1 using a aco 730

bay 4 agragrog (but will change to k1 next year

bay 5 black jap matt cartridge

i allso have another 70 litres of air in pond

and 30 watt uv which needs to be bigger

all run from 2x 11000 lph eagle aquatic pumps (great for the money)

its even better now we have the black knight vortex brush in as well

the pond is crystal clear

my next project for the spring is a protein skimmer:) and a k1 convertion

my pond is 2500L about 500g i i have a kockney koi 5000v and i works great i should have bought one sooner and a hailea 70 air pump and using my old tetrapond pressure filter as the uv

yes you need something round them it all helps to keep the chill off ,

the only downside with bubble wrap it can look messy mine is below the decking n hidden away :)

ive also got triple polycarb lids on as well to help keep all the heat in cus last year when i had a sharp frost the decking above the vortex was clear of frost

which ment the heat was escaping :w00t: hopefully that wont happen again :)

thanks sharon and john:):) john the stuff in the pic is in a shed but my skimmer piping etc.. is outside so i will be either using bubble wrap or that grey foam stuff;)

hi there:) my pond is 2300 gallons which is pump fed with a retro drain which is t-pieced off to a fluid bed and eazy pod , both these outlets go into my kockney koi 5000v filter that is converted to fluidised k1 and jap mat and filter wool in last bay to polish the water, uv is a cloverleaf smartstart 48w on skimmer line with an aquamax 5500 and filter wool in skimmer basket:cool::D and with one of johnos protein skimmers

i used to have a multi bay that was brushes , j/mat , alfrogrog , but to be honest was never happy with the alfrogrog as it collected a mulm on the top :angry:

every week i would wash it off with pond water that was what i could see , but that got me thinking what was underneath it :) so i took it all out n on the lip where the media tray say it had trapped the muck on there as well n wasnt getting flushed away :angry:

so i swopped this chamber for solid j/mat n gave the alfrogrog away :)

since then though i have altered my filters to incorporate a vortex with the jools easy n a fluid bed n block filter , never looked back :P

i am running a multibay at the moment with 2x bays of alfa in them and find it works well but i am in to minds weather to go on the easypod route next year as i seem to have a lot of floating bits every now and them ....3 days a month maybe:cool:

what kind of filtration do you use??i recently changed from a multibay with alfagrog to a homemade eazypod with a tub of fluidized and an extra settlement chamber with jap mat and i must say the results are remarkable ,i cannot believe the difference the k1 has made it really is wonderfull stuff,
what are ur thoughts on it and on filtration in general ?
what is ur choice of media?
have u any experience of k1 or alfagrog?
im interested in all opinions plz let me know!!thanx
and btw hello to all this site looks really nice
