I have a new QT and a new filter with it, it is an F20 cloverleaf, it is all up and running well. My question is how often should I clean it and what is the best way to do it? I will have around 30 2-3" koi when it is all running well. It has 3 chambers, the first brushes, the second flocore and the third aquarock and then 3 foams, it has one valve that would empty the bottom part which runs under all the media.

Thanks,

Dave

Hi Dave.

a few questions needed to form an opinion.

what volume of water is the QT?

what volume of water is the filter?

how much of each filter material is in each bay?

what temp are you running it at?

how many grms of food do you feed & what type?

Hi dave,

O.K.  I.M.H.O

I would clean the brushes whenever you see a build up of waste on them or maybe twice a week.

the foams will probably need cleaning once a week with water from your QT if you clean them weekly they will retain a lot of the bio and also wont get to the state were they need power washing to get them clean

the alphagrog & flocor shouldnt need flushing but if you can drain off the sediment that settles below it every couple of weeks it should prevent it from going anearobic.

you might also consider putting air stones in the flocor & alphagrog chambers.

hope this helps.

Sounds good, I have 2 air stones in the QT, I could move 1 to the flocore, does this help the filter?

Thanks,

Dave

yes it helps the bio enormously.

the bacteria needs higher levels of oxygen to thrive & reproduce.
