Hi all,

When buying koi is it better to buy larger/older koi

Or smaller/younger koi?

Not based on cost.

Whats is the benifits of each in your experience

Thanks i know its a silly question to experts like you but there is no point in spending money on lots of little fish who will not turn out like you expect or struggle to survive when you can spend a little more if they are stronger and fully developed.

Rob

none

This is not a silly question at all. It raises many points, most of which are personal choice. Some people like to buy smaller fish and take great satisfaction from growing them on. Others like to have medium size fish which are closer to finishing pattern and are more striking in the pond. You can still get satisfaction from growing these. Others will always buy large finished fish for showing. These people are in a minority due to costs.

In general for successful growing on of small fish you will require heating.. Small 6"-10" fish will struggle to survive a first winter in an unheated outdoor environment. Larger fish are generally hardier so would be more suitable in unheated conditions.

Lastly the behaviour in the pond is different. Smaller fish tend to be skittish and dart here and there whereas larger fish take on the more graceful, slower swimming pattern.

Back to the beginning - personal choice is the main player.

Im just entering my third winter as a koi keeper and in the beginning I only bought very small fish hoping to grow them on and see them grow big.

This never really happened as most died over winter or the subsequent spring so I only buy 8-10 inch and above.
